Welcome

Welcome to Northumbrian Photographic Workshops please have a relaxing tour round this site. You may interested in joining in one of our photography workshops/holidays They will be creative weekends where you will visit several sites in Northumberland, with like minded fellow photographrs and have the opportunity to; discover new skills and techniques in a relaxed holiday like atmosphere. Hopefully by the end of the time here you will be able to look at landscapes in a different way. The small group numbers (max 5) enable time for any individual and group tuition on many aspects of digital photography.

Myself
I’m John Smith and many years ago I bought a camera (the Russian Zenith E, brick) with some birthday money and within six months it changed my life forever. I had a makeshift darkroom in the bathroom and started a full time photography course at a local college. Two and a half years later I started to work in photography for a large organisation doing all sorts of photography from press releases, display work, commercial, technical and landscape. Photography is also a great hobby of mine particularly landscape, concert and still life. During my career I have taught photography at evening classes, run courses at work and have been a moderator on the Open University ’Introduction to Digital Photography’ course.

Northumberland and me.
I first visited Northumberland many years ago on family holidays and even before I started taking photographs. I have become a regular visitor since then and eventually bought a house up here. The area has so many wonderful locations but even better, compared to England’s other scenic areas, it is still relatively quiet. I hope that during these courses I will be able to convey some of my love for the region to the students. I have always had a fascination with castles and Northumberland has castles from large to small from mysterious ruins to intact residences. There is a magnificent coast with endless changing views, stunning country houses and wild moors - all in all a photographers dream. From this year (2020) I'll be selling my Northumberland house and will change the way I take bookings from this year, see the details in the booking section.

Yorkshire
Much as I love Northumberland I also love my native Yorkshire, I was born, educated and learnt my profession there and now split my time between there and Northumberland. As you will see, I am offering some workshops in Yorkshire where there are many superb locations to photograph. There are places like the Yorkshire Sculpture Park where you see the exhibits in the open landscape, large country houses with landscaped gardens and the wild areas of the dales and moors. Please check out some of the details elsewhere in this site.
